The Yell Leader and his Presidential Run

The Yell Leader, our Governor, has finally come home to Texas after journeying across the nation seeking the Republican nomination for President.

One thing is for certain – he has put the State of Texas all over the news again. We Texans don’t like being shunned by any administration and Perry may be our path to pay back.

With one of the least senior Congressional delegations over the last century, we do not hold much power in Congress. It is the first time there hasn’t been a Texan of some clout in any position in the White House in my memory.

We have to remember that Clinton was just from neighboring state, Arkansas, and had many supporters and funders in Texas. He also appointed several Texans to high-ranking positions in his administrations.

With the Yell Leader cheering on his successes, our state is back in the news. When he’s leading the cheers, the news is all good. We’ve created the most jobs! We have thriving, diverse urban centers that are perfect for entrepreneurial activity! We have low taxes! We have a balanced budget!

Of course, the media and pundits have decided to scrutinize much more closely. They are focusing on education, health care and our virtual lack of social services.

Most Texas kids go back to school this week. (Mine doesn’t start until next week.) There will be fewer teachers and more kids per classroom. There are more students who need help. Every back-to-school fair around Houston these last few weeks has been packed to capacity with parents seeking to meet the supply demands for their kids.

But hey, we’re a picture of success in tough economic times. The Yell Leader may simply bolster our economy by traveling the country and telling people about the opportunities in Texas. Maybe more business will move here and more job seekers too.

Rah, rah TEXAS!

  1. Just a quick question–if there are so many opportunities in Texas, why are there so many pickup trucks with Texas license plates in northern Pennsylvania? Where I live we have a severe housing shortage because of all the out-of-state workers who have relocated here for jobs in the natural gas industry, and they are living in hotel rooms (which means that when the census was taken last year, they weren’t included in the local or state population). I must admit, though, it was fun watching them trying to drive in the snow last winter–because I was like that when I first moved here in 1998.
