Welcome to February!  Today is the first official day that candidates and incumbents for City elections can begin raising funds.  Yes, it’s true folks, those letters and invites are already in the mail and filling up the inbox for many of us.

This year promises to be an interesting election year.  Rumors are still holding strong that Ben Hall, a former City Attorney, is planning to challenge Mayor Parker as she seeks re-election to her third term.  He has already filed paperwork designating a Treasurer and hired campaign professionals.

Council Member Melissa Noriega is completing her term on Council and will not be eligible to seek re-election.   Position 3, At-Large will be an open seat.  These candidates must run citywide.  A number of names are surfacing for the position and we can expect as many as 8 to 10 people to seek the spot.  We’ll monitor closely and keep you informed.

Wanda Adams in District D has also completed her term.  District D covers Third Ward and much of Southeast Houston and is a predominantly African-American population.  Again, several candidate names are emerging for this seat and we anticipate there will be a minimum of 5 contenders.

District I has been represented by James Rodriguez for the last 6 years and he is not eligible to seek re-election.  This District includes downtown, east side, all the way to the Hobby airport area.  It is a primarily Latino population district.  Expect a vigorous campaign in this district that will overlap with the Senate 6 Special Election and carry coalitions formed there into the politics of this race.

Additionally, incumbent At-Large Council Member Andrew Burks is expected to face serious opposition as is District A Council Member Helena Brown.  Opponents have emerged in both of these races.  Burks and Brown are  in their first terms on Council.

We promise to do our best to keep you informed on all the happenings, inside perspectives, money raised and provide quality information as best we can on these candidates and their campaigns.
