“Smile, You’re on Candid Camera”

Mitt Romney – Bless his heart. He just can’t seem to win these days. The latest episode involves “secret” footage of him discussing campaign strategy at a private event with high-level donors.

Honestly, if you can’t openly discuss strategy there, where can you? These days, absolutely nowhere. I truly believe that someone would record a conversation in the bathroom if they deemed it relevant.

Elected officials and candidates – BEWARE! There are cameras everywhere, absolutely everywhere. You cannot speak out of one side of your mouth today and the other side tomorrow without expecting it be captured.

But back to Romney – He was clearly discussing campaign strategy and describing why 47$ of Americans would not vote for him, because they are “dependent on the government and don’t pay taxes”. I’m sure it seemed reasonable at the time but the undertones to his comments are significant.

Some people are claiming this is the “end of Romney”, the “election is over”. I disagree. Many Obama supporters are upset and the media is having a field day dissecting who actually pays taxes versus who doesn’t but this party is far from over.

The first major candidate debate will be on October 3. Many Americans will not tune in to watch the candidates engage but more importantly, to watch and hope for a gaffe. Not to worry. If you miss it, the media frenzy will ensure you hear about any gaffes. Romney has a chance to redeem himself during the debates but Obama is very good at one-on-one. He took on Hilary Clinton with grace while making her look shrill and John McCain with dignity while making him look out of touch. These are just factual observations of his debate skills.

For Romney, expectations are low so if he even holds his own, it will be a victory for him. It also gives him a chance to convey his message. The Romney campaign does not appear to be well-managed but the election is never over until the votes are counted.

If you’re a Romney fan, keep the faith. If you are an Obama fan, don’t become arrogant and overconfident.

And remember, no matter what you say, “Smile – You’re on Candid Camera”.
