Pondering Perry for President

As you may recall, I like to refer to Governor Perry as the “Yell Leader”. During his time at Texas A&M, he was a Yell Leader for the team and charged with encouraging school spirit.

I don’t find his role these days much different. He’s a Yell Leader for Texas, traversing the country telling the story of Texas success. And, of course, Texas has been successful all because of his leadership.

Now, the pundits are in a virtual frenzy over the fact he might run for President. He is certainly making all the moves to position himself as a candidate. Some Republicans are frothing at the mouth over the idea and Democrats seem interested as well.

Some Austin folks are already speculating on the musical chairs that might occur if he ran and won. This really isn’t so far-fetched given the fact that Perry became Governor when George W. Bush became President.

Still, I’m not convinced the Perry for President campaign is legitimate. He is clearly testing the waters and making the right moves to seek the highest office in the land. But the clock is ticking. A Presidential campaign demands millions and millions of dollars as well as long-term, well planned strategies for execution.

Some of the candidates in the Republican primary have been planning their run for many years. Mitt Romney basically never quit running after his showing in the 2008 Republican primaries.

Personally, I think Perry is positioning himself as a strong Vice Presidential contender. It’s a good path to travel. With his popularity among the Christian conservatives in the party and his geographical location, he will make a strong addition to a Republican ticket.

And, there’s still the Palin question. If she’s in, they would truly bump into each other among their mutually shared base of voters. If she doesn’t join the race, she may throw her support his direction.

We’ll keep watching the Yell Leader as he stirs the spirit of audiences across the country about his beloved Texas.

  1. This may or may not surprise you, but I’m in agreement with you! Interesting times for Texas for sure! If Perry is going to run, he better throw his hat in the ring pretty quick. I think he can raise the money required to run a presidential campaign, but I don’t think his heart is in yet – as president. Vice president? You bet!!
