It’s Budget Day At Houston City Hall

Today, the City Council will embark on their annual rite of passage – the Budget. Each year, they must tackle the complex issue of the city’s finances.

For many years, I have watched this process and find it fascinating. Even in the “flush” years, it is never easy to balance the budget. There is always a need for more Police and Fire Fighters in an ever expanding population. It’s not possible to build enough parks, maintain and improve the existing ones. Public infrastructure is a never-ending need.

When times are tough, these issues intensify significantly. This year is one of the toughest budget years since the 1980’s. Mayor Parker has worked very hard to create a budget that minimizes damage but makes the necessary cuts while maintaining services.

Council Members have proposed approximately 58 amendments to make changes to the administration’s budget. This is actually a relatively low number. At times, Council Members have offered more than 100 proposed amendments to various budgets.

Today, they will debate, discuss and should ultimately vote on financing the City of Houston for the next fiscal year.

The best news of all for citizens is that there is no tax increase included. There have been various fee increases over the last few months – things like alarm permits, valet parking permits, etc. And, of course, the drainage fee.

Still, there will not be a bottom line increase on our tax bills.
