Sine Died

Thank goodness the Legislature finally celebrated “the end.” They were tired and we were tired of them.

Texas chose to create a limited government for a reason. I still have a button that says “what they really meant was 2 days every 140 years”. While humorous, it’s not to realistic. Still, I was thinking about pulling it out the last couple of weeks.

When I was a very young woman, I went right to work in the Legislature as a staffer. One of my first bosses had a framed, beautifully scripted sign in his office that said, “No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature in Session.”

So very true and especially this year. However, the real pain of their work will begin to hit our pocketbooks as school districts assess how much they must raise taxes to keep their districts operating in lieu of state funds. Then, we’ll all be screaming ouch. Let us please remember that our State elected officials are the reason for these tax increases.

I spent 8 Legislative Sessions in and out of Austin myself, beginning in 1981. Since that time, I have been a solid observer of their ongoing actions and antics.

I have to say that across these 30 years, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a worse Session. The budget was tough and the people were tougher. The issues were complex in an ever-growing state and the legislators were complicated.

They also proved to me something I witnessed when Democrats controlled all offices. Having complete control over the Legislature does not make it any easier to solve problems. At least when there is an even split, you can blame the other party.

Welcome back to our Legislators. Please take a few days with your families and close friends and remember the things that matter most!
