Latino Time!

Last night, the Mayor of San Antonio – Julian Castro, gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Last week, Texas’ Republican U.S. Senate nominee – Ted Cruz, was granted an important speaking slot at the Republican National Convention.

America has been introduced to two, very different power Latinos from Texas. Actually, since Joaquin Castro introduced his twin brother and is the Democratic nominee for Congress in San Antonio, we’ll call it an even three!

Cruz is a second-generation American and the Castros are third-generation. Both reflect the future of Texas and the United States. They also reflect the growing diversity of a community beginning to feel its power.

The Castros are strong Democrats. Mayor Castro spoke aggressively about his support for President Obama while Ted Cruz speaks out for a strongly conservative agenda.

Yet, they both tell a story of opportunity. They both attended Harvard Law School and have worked hard to achieve the American dream.

Many people consider this the “Latino Century” in America and it very well may be the case. If it is true, then Texas clearly has put forth faces to be proud of on the national scene. Whether you agree or disagree with their politics, they make our state proud.
